Whether you’re gearing up for the GFNL, BFNL, or GDFNL, or pushing for the elite talent pathways at Kardinia Park, the groundwork you lay now determines your availability in Round 1. From a podiatry perspective, this is the window to bulletproof your lower limbs before the intensity ramps up. Book your pre-season assessment here.
The Danger of Mechanical Overload
One of the primary injury risks during pre-season is sudden increase in loading. After an off-season break, your tendons and bones require a graded exposure to stress. Gradually increasing running volume, high-speed sprinting, and multidirectional agility drills is essential to mitigate the risk of bone stress and soft tissue tears.
Pain is a Data Point—Don’t Ignore It
If you are experiencing persistent symptoms or localised pain, this is your first sign to book an appointment with one of our highly qualified experts. Running through the pain is rarely a strategy for success. Early intervention can prevent a minor 2-week niggle from evolving into an 8-week layoff.
Your Boots Matter
Footwear matters more than most players think. Worn-out outsoles, inappropriate stud patterns for the hard surfaces we see across Geelong and the Surf Coast, or a poor fit can increase pressure on certain areas of the foot that can lead to blisters, forefoot pain, and ankle instability.

Pre-season is the perfect time to:
- Evaluate Wear Patterns: What is your old pair telling us about your biomechanics? And is it time to replace those old boots?
- Optimise Fit: Ensure correct sizing in particular your width to keep you active, healthy and happy for the season ahead.
- Correct Stud Selection: Match your traction to the ground density
The Strength Component
Your foot muscles play a huge role in shock absorption, balance, and stability during sprinting, cutting, and jumping – strength work matters. Adding calf raises, single-leg strength work, and balance training into your program can significantly reduce injury risk and improve performance.
