Cricket is back! Are your feet ready?

Foot and ankle injuries are common amongst cricketers with more than 11% of injuries affecting fast bowlers involving the foot and ankle. And it is no wonder… Fast bowling can apply forces 2-3 times higher than general running through our feet and legs, putting them at risk of injury.

Some of Australia’s best cricketers including Aaron Finch, Tayla Vlaeminke, Mitchell Starc, Tim Paine, Mitchell Johnson have battled with foot/ankle injuries throughout their careers.

6 Common Foot and Ankle Injuries in Cricket:

  1. Heel pain – (e.g. Plantar fasciosis, bursitis, fat pad impingement, bony injury)
Can occur due to high forces which are applied to the heel during a game of cricket when bowling, batting or fielding
  2. Stress fracture/fractures
Due to high repetitive loads, especially during bowling, cricketers are at risk of metatarsal fractures/stress fractures
  3. Lateral ankle sprains
Common injury in cricket, often in the field. Sudden change of direction, especially on uneven surfaces in local cricket.
  4. Big toe joint
Injuries including turf toe and sesamoiditis are common in cricketers. High loads during bowling (both spin and pace bowling) can be a causative factor as can biomechanical abnormalities.
  5. Achilles Pain
Due to repetitive overloading of the Achilles tendon. High/fast loads going through the tendon when bowling, running between the wickets and quick movements when fielding can lead to injury.
  6. Skin and Nail injuries
Damaged nails, callouses and blisters can also be incredibly painful and affect performance as much as the bony and soft tissue injuries mentioned above. Thankfully, skin and nail injuries can be easily managed by our Podiatrists.
