The mercury is beginning to creep above 20 degrees and the spring sunshine is beaming down on us. This mean’s it’s time to transition from the winter woolies to our summer wardrobes! With the promise of longer days and excursions at the beach, the shoes we wear on warm days often end up forming a big question here in the Podiatry room.
As Podiatrists, we understand how difficult it can be to find the perfect summer shoe; in particular, one that is fashionable while also providing a stable base of support. So, when choosing your summer shoe to wear all day we recommend looking for two major features; fixation and a stable heel counter.
It is important to choose a shoe that offers some form of fixation. Fixation can be in the form of a velcro strap or an “around the ankle” buckle, and reduces how hard the intrinsic foot muscles have to work and will limit the likelihood of you having a fall.
Wearing a shoe or sandal with a heel counter can make a world of difference to the overall comfort of the shoe. A heel counter is the round backing of normal shoes; a number of sandals are now designed to incorporate this feature to reduce the possibility of your foot slipping out or over the shoe. A shoe with a heel counter will reduce the workload of your foot throughout the day, which means you can focus on the more important things that summer has to offer.
What are our top shoes for summer?
With all of that in mind, our top 5 shoes for all day wear in summer are as follows:
We also recommend arch support thongs ‘Archies‘ for a replacement for your trusty Havianas. Archies Thongs are arch support thongs designed by a podiatrist to reduce the workload of the intrinsic foot muscles. You will find Archies available at each of our Pro Feet Podiatry clinics or at Active Feet.
It is important to have your summer footwear specially fitted to ensure maximum comfort for longer, warmer days. We recommend having your shoes fitted at Active Feet in Ocean Grove or Bared Footwear for help with summer shoes that are both functional and stylish.
