What is it used for
Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), or more commonly known as ‘shockwave therapy’ really isn’t as scary as it sounds! ESWT is used to treat a range of lower limb conditions, particularly long-standing soft tissue injuries such as plantar fasciitis (heel pain), achilles tendinopathy and shin pain.
How does it work?
When tendons and other soft tissues are working well, they are nice and elastic. But when these structures become damaged over a long period of time, they become thick, hard and un-elastic. Because the structure isn’t stretchy anymore, it can take a while to ‘warm up’ after long periods of rest, which is why you may have pain first thing in the morning (ouch!).
ESWT emits a ‘sound wave’ helping to increase blood flow and healing. ESWT can also result in an immediate relief in pain, making it easier to complete exercises and stretches to get patients better, faster.
What does it feel like?
The sound wave emitted by the shockwave therapy just feels like pressure (no electric shocks as the name suggests) and the good thing is that we can alter the level of pressure according to the individual we are treating. This means that we can start off on a low setting and increase until we reach a level that is comfortable for the patient whilst also ensuring we are getting maximal results.
How many times do I need to come in for treatment?
Although everyone is different, the recommended number and timing for treatment is 4 sessions approximately 7 days apart for the first four weeks. This is just a guideline and can be altered for each individual.
How much does it cost?
We care about keeping our patients active, healthy and happy, and believe that you shouldn’t have to pay more to get the best treatment available. We do not charge an additional fee for receiving shockwave therapy as a part of your consultation, it’s all included in your consultation fee!
