Does your child need orthotics?!February 4, 2019
As 2019 gets into full swing, as does school and of course the sporting seasons! At Pro Feet Podiatry we’re passionate about keeping kids fit, active and happy which is why we are proactive when it comes to injury prevention.
To help keep kids on the sporting field and pain-free at school, the Podiatrists at Pro Feet Podiatry can help manage the factors that can lead to injuries with the possible implementation of customised foot orthotics.
What are orthotics?
An orthotic is a flexible insole used to provide support within your shoe. Orthotic devices or arch supports can be beneficial in the overall management of many foot, ankle and lower leg conditions. The aim of an orthotic device is to improve the way you move – walk, run or function – to reduce excess load on the affected part of your body. Children have flexible feet and we want to keep them that way! So, at Pro Feet Podiatry we design our orthotics to be flexible, avoiding any restriction in the foot which may lead to other injuries.
How are the orthotics made?
Our flexible orthotic devices are custom made, which makes each device unique to your child’s foot. To accurately capture your child’s unique foot shape and size we use the latest technology to take a 3D image of their foot. Once we have captured these images, we send them to a lab where they are made with modifications decided on by your podiatrist. This process generally takes two weeks before we fit them to your child’s shoes.
Are my child’s old orthotics still doing what they’re supposed to do?
As your child grows and their feet change, it is important that their current orthotic devices still mould to the foot as designed. As each orthotic is custom made, if your child has had a recent growth spurt or has gone up a shoe size, it’s likely the orthotic isn’t doing its job properly. Often ill-fitting orthotics may be doing more harm than good!
How much does it cost?
To keep children fit, active and injury free, Pro Feet Podiatry offers children no out pocket costs on orthotics through their private health insurance. This includes both the 3D scan we take of your child’s foot and also the custom flexible orthotic devices.
